Why God Loves You

“The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the LORD loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the LORD brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.” Deuteronomy 7:7-8

I am glad that God has his own mind and own reasons for loving his people. For certainly as Israel had nothing special to offer… except willful stubbornness and unbelief so his people today (be they Jew or Gentile) are not special in our attributes. One attribute with Israel of old we do share… willful stubbornness and great unbelief and yet God chose to love us and continues to do so. How truly great, good, and merciful is our loving Heavenly Father!

No, we can’t brag. We are not gloriously righteous or good. Inside our hearts still beats a fleshly ‘old man’ who returns us to our anger, our pride, our selfishness, and our idolatrous stubbornness and unbelief. Let’s admit it… that is who we are.

Let’s stop playing the game of king of the mountain as far as morality, righteousness, and judging of others… rather, may God give us a heart to know who and what and why we are and serve, love, and show grace and mercy to others. Yep, we are rotten and still so strangely enough… we are a part of God’s people.

God loves you not because you gave, not because you forgave, and not because you are some kind of super spiritual person that the angels greatly admire. No, God loves you because he wants to and he will unconditionally love you even when you are a stinker or think of yourself as holier-than-thou…

“For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God. But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.” (1 Corinthians 1:26-31).
