Our Rock and Fortress

“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; My savior, You save me from violence.” 2 Samuel 22:2-3 & Psalm 18:2-3

This beautiful prayer of David came after many lonely nights, battles, pain, and struggle. Through all the brokenness in heart and spirit that God lead David through he always looked to heaven and offered sacrifices of praise. God faithfully meet David’s needs.

Each of us are like a David… There are times in our lives when—‘life happens.’ When plans fall apart, when dreams are crushed, and when faithful friends depart from us in our pain…

Yet, through the most perilous days know this… God is with you! He will not forsake you. You are his Beloved children. Your Heavenly Father will never abandon you—in times of trouble… consider… Maybe God wishes to teach you something very important.

God fully knows your needs, your worries, and your hidden fears. When trouble occurs—for it will—be like David and run to your Rock—to God. Hide in God’s fortress, wait beside the still waters and mediate on His Word. Watch and see God deliver you. Watch as the dark clouds pass and the sun rises and joy returns.

For you may endure pain for a while, for a season, but after these ‘growing pains’ you may notice that pain-suffering-hardship turn to be your deepest blessing. Pain lifts our hearts away from ourselves and to God. Pain brings us to the realization that our only strength comes from our God—our God of the greatest compassion, mercy, and goodness.

There is no need to carry your burden on your own. That is never God’s intention. Bring your burden to the cross. Lay them at your Savior’s feet and find strength like David to overcome your present adversary and to present such a prayer-as humble David.

Faithful Father, it is difficult to see you in times of trouble—for trouble is all that we see. Teach us to be patient. To wait. To hear your voice speaking calmly—reassuring to our hearts. Lord, thank you for the pain of rejection, the pain of hardship, of trial, of nights alone and in tears… for O God it is there that you comfort me… it is there that I hear you so plainly… when all I want is you. Thank you for suffering for it teaches this cold-hard heart your ways-conforms my frail character ever so slowly and gently into the image of Jesus, bless His name forever more. Comfort us in times of distress… O God!
