Assumptions & Trouble

“The men of Israel looked them over and accepted the evidence. But they didn't ask GOD about it.” Joshua 9:14

The people of Gibeon knew of the destruction of Jericho and the city of Ai and they were afraid. So they devised a plan to send men who were dressed very raggedly in the hope that they could win a covenant with Joshua and with the nation of Israel and thereby be spared. It worked, because the people believed an assumption that the men of Gibeon were from a far country and more importantly because they did not gain counsel from God.

Has this ever happened to you, have you ever believed an assumption? Unfortunately, I have to admit that I’ve fallen for assumptions just as easily and also… that I did not rightly go to God and ask His advice when unsure.

That’s one reason why prayer is so important. It’s for our good, it’s a safety-net… a means to approach God and ask His good advice instead of leaning on our own.

Today, watch out for those assumptions… they are everywhere… but prayer to God will certainly show us a better way!

Father, each day assumptions and half-truths come our way that can easily trip us up. Remind us to pray and seek your face and then guide us in the way that we should go for your glory.
